This is an excavated Civil War field artillery projectile in good condition known as a 3” Dyer shell. The cylindrical-shaped projectile measures 7” high and weighs about 8 pounds. The shell, constructed of cast iron, is an excavated specimen that features a rounded nose, a perfect lead sabot on the base, and a Dyer zinc time fuse adapter screwed into the nose. The top of the fuse is mostly chipped away. The projectile is in good, solid “dug” condition. Iron surface of the shell has some minor pitting, otherwise smooth overall. [jet]
