North Carolina furnished more than 120,000 men to the Confederacy. This is a nice example of the state’s starburst or sunburst pattern button copied from early British patterns and worn by many of these troops. Made of one-piece, die-struck copper, this coat size version has a stippled background behind the seven-pointed star. Inside the star is a circle enclosing the letters “NC” on a lined background. The reverse shows some of the die work and lacks the shank, which is usual on excavated examples of this button because of their characteristically weak solder joint. Green and gray patina. Excavated in central Virginia. [sr]
