Excavated at Clarks Mountain, Virginia, this small size V.M.I. button features the Virginia state seal on the face the word “CADET” at top and the initials “V.M.I.” at bottom. The face retains 30-40 percent gilt and sharp details. The back and shank are in place and dark, but the partially visible backmark seems to be “D. Evans & Co. Attleboro.” Founded in 1839, VMI was considered the West Point of the south and educated somewhat more than 1,700 future Confederate officers. Over the years, buttons were supplied by a number of northern manufacturers and they are a collecting subgroup of their own. [sr]
