This plate was obtained by Bill Gavin in March of 1953 from the collection of L. V. Franklin of Corinth, Mississippi. The two pieces show signs of having been cleaned many years ago. Casting is crude and poorly done. Detail is subdued but the "CS" at center on tongue shows well. Tape labels on back are faded and hard to read. Item comes with a page from Mr. Gavin's note book that reads "Buckle (2 piece) Confederate. "CS" secured from L. V. Franklin in 1952. He got it from a Corinth, Miss. collector. Probably found in Corinth area."
This exact plate can be found in Mr. Gavin’s book Accoutrement Plates North and South 1861-1865, Figure 82 on page 120. His text makes note regarding the plate that “The relatively crude workmanship…illustrates the wide variation found in quality of manufacture….It is one of the crudest ever examined.” [ad]
