This is a large “dug” artillery projectile for the 32-pounder rifle. Of Confederate manufacture, this is a shell with two bourrelet rings, pointy nose, and copper sabot cast into the base.
The Read pattern utilized two raised bourrelet rings so only the rings had to be accurately machined, the majority of the body could be left rough.
Tapered fuse hole in nose is empty. Projectile measures approximately 9.8” tall.
Overall condition is good. Iron shows surface pitting overall; with heavier pitting on one side. The sabot is in very good condition overall with only one small ding. Nice lathe marks on sabot. [jet] [ph:L]
