CONFEDERATE 7” BROOKE BOLT

$2,000.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 727-243

This is a heavy “dug” artillery projectile for the 7” Brooke rifle. Of Confederate manufacture, this is a solid bolt with two bourrelet rings, blunt nose, and copper sabot bolted to the bottom.

Projectile was manufactured following John Brooke 's design. The sabot system utilized a copper disc held in place by ratchet ribs cast into both the heavy sabot and shell body, and secured with a center bolt. This allowed the parts made of different metals, copper and iron, to be prepared independently and assembled at the end. This pattern utilized two raised bourrelet rings so only the rings had to be accurately machined, the majority of the body could be left rough. The top is only slightly rounded, this nearly flat top was designed to deliver maximum impact against the Federal ironclads.

Projectile measures approximately 11.5” tall and just under 7” in diameter. The copper sabot is nearly 1.5” thick and held in place by a square nut.

Overall condition is good. Iron is solid with only light surface pitting, which is typical of any “dug” iron object. The sabot is in very good condition overall with iron nut in place and only two 1” chunks gouged out on one side which leaves projectile very displayable.  [jet] [ph:M/L]
