This equestrian artifact is an original and complete side-pull snaffle bit, aka horse watering bit recovered from an undisclosed location on the Fredericksburg battlefield. Relic specimen of horse equipment exhibits the two 3” diameter cheek rings connected to a 6½” long iron crescent shaped connector in very good, strong condition. The bit was connected to a regular bridle bit and used primarily to take two or three led horses to water by a single soldier. Iron surface is rusted but solid. No maker’s mark. Relic comes with an old typewritten paper tag that reads “Horse Bit / Fredericksburg.” Makes a great addition to any Civil War horse display.
