This original Civil War contract longarm is a .58 caliber Lamson, Goodnow & Yale contract single-shot muzzleloader relic in fair to good excavated condition. It was recovered from the Cold Harbor, Virginia battlefield in the early 1870’s. The L G&Y musket was a product of the E.G. Lamson, A. F. Goodnow and B. B. Yale firm. The company’s forging facilities were at Windsor, Vermont while the machine shops were in Shelburn Falls, Massachusetts. Fifty thousand L G &Y longarm muzzleloaders were produced by the firm during the years 1861 and 1865.
Musket is complete with its full wood stock, lockplate, hammer, rear sight, three barrel bands, triggerguard, buttplate, tulip ramrod and bayonet frozen to the muzzle. Lock plate surface wears a mottled light gray surface with moderate rust pitting overall. Remnants of the lock markings in front of the hammer are of the first type and include the traces of the 3-line address of “__ / _ _G.-& Y. / ____OR-Vt”. All other letters worn away. Behind the hammer is a partial date “_86_ ”.
The forty-inch barrel is finished bright with just few scattered light patches of dark oxidation at the lower and middle barrel band from handling. Bore is shiny bright and rifling strong. Top flat of barrel breech marked with “1864” and left facet shows the proof marks “V / P/ Eaglehead” thin but clearly stamped on the barrel. In addition, two distinct British-like export proof marks stamped on the left side of barrel breech are strong and clear. They appear to be a provisional proof mark or viewer’s mark and a gauge mark (25) for .58 caliber. Bore is shiny bright with sharp lands and grooves. The distinct design of the hammer bears the distinct British-style contour and is shiny bright. Nipple bolster area has a thin spreadwinged eagle stamping. Mechanics are strong and crisp.
The handsome, dark, black walnut stock is uncleaned and exhibits scattered light scratches, minor dings and scuff marks overall. One light inspector cartouche is visible on the left side of stock opposite the lock. No other markings visible. All original screws are sharp and bright with no evidence of buggering, including the barrel band screws. Lockplate screws and washers fine. Stock shows a thin hairline surface crack that starts at the rightmost lock screw and progresses forward for 1” to the stock’s corner adjacent to the barrel facet. Original buttplate, triggerguard, bands and nose cap all in fine, bright condition. Butt tang itself is marked “US”. Original, steel, tulip-shaped ramrod retains its threaded tip and is in fine, shiny bright condition. An excellent condition, contract Special Model 1861 rifle musket by L.G. & Y.
