This is a Government issue cap made by George Hoff & Co. of Philadelphia. The condition of the cap is good. The body is solid but it has had some major repairs due to moth damage. The largest is in the area of the left side button. There is a very well done repair in this area that meas. approx. 3.50 inches at its widest and 1.00 in height. Most of the repair runs along the base. Just above this repair are two pencil eraser sized holes that have also been repaired. The front of the cap has 4 small holes, all of which have been repaired. Scattered over the body are a few smaller, minor untouched, nips. Cap has the classic “duck-bill” visor with light crazing as is normal. Both side-buttons are General Service Eagle buttons. Chinstrap is complete and in very good condition. The disc is very nice and is in very good condition with a stamped brass Company letter “G” at center. Below this is the regimental number “2’, also done in stamped brass. The “G” meas. approx. 1.00-inch high while the number “2” is 0.50 inch high. The inside of the cap is excellent. Ox-blood sweatband is 100% intact as is the brown polished cotton lining. Both show some light wear from use. Original triangular leather tab holds the “G” in place while the “2” is secured by wires. In the crown of the cap is a paper label that reads “GEO. HOFF & CO., PHILADA. No.4 = 7 1/8.”

George Hoff & Company had numerous Government contracts for forage caps during the war. He was one of the more prolific cap makers, turning out 550,000 caps or more.
