Hat is made of black felt with a bound edge. Front has a striking insignia of silver embroidered “MS” inside a wreath of gold bullion and sequins. This is done on a black felt background surrounded by a strand of gold dead bullion. Right side of the hat is turned up and held in place by a very nice embroidered “Jeff Davis” eagle. Again, the eagle is done in thick, gold bullion thread with silver stars. This is executed on a field of black felt outlined with a single strand of dead bullion.
Around the base of the crown is a gold and black officer’s hat cord with large acorns. Left front has a black cockade with a General Service eagle button at center. This cockade holds a long, full ostrich feather in place along the left side. Interior of the hat has full leather sweatband with a blue cloth liner. The liner is stamped in the crown “US Army” with a spread-winged eagle. Stamping is a little weak. Everything on the hat is in excellent condition and all is like new. Does not look like the hat was ever worn.
