2ND LIEUTENANT’S FROCK COAT WITH STAFF OFFICER’S BUTTONS

$4,500.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1000-510

Coat is made of dark blue broadcloth. The exterior condition is very good. Moth damage is minimal. There are some small moth bites and scattered tracking throughout but nothing concentrated. It is all very minor. One of the largest bites is visible just above the second button down from the collar. Black felt lines the collar. Felt has suffered some moth damage toward the back of the neck. Aside from that, the felt is very nice. Each shoulder has a 2nd Lieutenant of Infantry shoulder strap. The straps are in matching condition and look to be original to the coat. The dark royal blue rank field on each is in excellent condition while the single gold bullion thread boarders are good and still sparkle a bit despite some surface dirt and discoloration from age. The outer and inner jaceron borders are of dead bullion and are very good on both straps.

The eight buttons down the front (one is missing) are all Staff Officer’s buttons. Six are backmarked “WATERBURY BUTTON CO. EXTRA.” The other two are “SCOVILLE MFG. CO. WATERBURY” and “EXTRA QUALITY.” All appear to have been resewn to the coat. Each cuff has only two of the three Staff buttons remaining. These appear original to the coat and are from various makers. Three of the four tail buttons are present. All three are Staff buttons and all three are “WATERBURY BUTTON CO. EXTRA” and appear to be original to the coat. Each tail has a pocket that is lined with a brown polished cotton. Lining has suffered from age and is coming loose in places.

The interior of the coat is in very nice condition. The lining in the body and skirts is present and complete throughout and show only minor scattered moth nips. There are no visible rips or tears. The left center of the back has a small area of stress separation but this is minor. The body lining is quilted in the chest and around the arms. There is a horizontal pocket in the left chest. Sleeves are lined with white muslin and the seams where the sleeve lining meets the coat lining are excellent. Interior lining looks to have been a black polished cotton that is fading to have a green tinge.

Wonderful conditioned Civil War 2nd Lieutenant’s frock coat. Will make a wonderful display.  [ad]
