This item is a collection of early twentieth century postcards gathered from the town of Kearny, New Jersey which is named in honor of Major General Philip Kearny.  Although Kearny was born in New York City, later in life, he made roots in New Jersey.  Major General Kearny had an extensive military record that extended from his service as a dragoon to the Civil War. During his service in the Civil War, he was Brigadier General of the 1st New Jersey Brigade. He was KIA at Chantilly, Virginia and was known for inadvertently breeching Confederate lines at the Second Battle of Bull Run. It was his career with the 1st New Jersey that brought him honorary recognition for the township of Kearny to carry his namesake.

Each postcard in this collection recognizes some facet of Kearny’s life or the town of Kearny to war veterans. The top row of postcards illustrates The New Jersey Home for Aged/Disabled Soldiers.  It consisted of a large main residential building with several adjoining structures. The home was in use from 1887-1932 and later was implemented as GAR Post no. 36, McAllister.

The middle row of postcards consists of images relating to the statue erected in town in Kearny’s honor and the infamous “Kearny Castle.” Kearny built a residence in Belgrove, NJ, and the estate would later be named “Belle Grove”. Castle-like in appearance due to its architecture and Kearny’s, then, extensive art collection.

The bottom row contains miscellaneous images of Kearny Castle, souvenir buttons from the Home for Disabled Soldiers, and an image of the inside one of the Home’s dormitories.

This is an unique collection of postcards for anyone interested in the life of Major General Philip Kearny or who are collect items related to veterans.  [mk] [ph:m]
