Rich black felt, with 1902 regulation “star” side vents. Fore and aft center crease. Brim measures wide 3.25” on sides, 2.75” front & rear. Crown 4.5 to 5”. Regulation triple stitching round the edges. Black outer crown ribbon has been replaced with gold GAR hat cord with bullion tasseled knobs. Inner sweat band missing. Approximate size 7.
Felt exhibits light dusty patina, and light wear over all. Displays one small crack across rear brim stitching, and one small hole along left rear crown crease. Also two small, barely noticeable chin strap puncture holes on right and left sides of brim. Otherwise VG and highly attractive. G.A.R hat cord & tassels are in excellent condition.
Though tan colored Span-Am / Philippine-era campaign hats were the rule, the black version remained an alternative worn almost exclusively by officers and chaplains. They were also sold commercially, and, as in this case, often put to use by GAR veterans. An attractive slouch hat, with interest to both GAR and Span-Am-era aficionados.
