Item Code: 2021-957

This GAR sword is patterned after the Model 1860 Field and Staff Officer’s sword and is in good condition.

The blade is double edged. Both edges are free of any nicks. The obverse and reverse surfaces of the blade are blank with no etching. The obverse surface of the blade has a 3.50 inch long section of heavy pitting at center with another 1.25 inch long section a little further up toward the ricasso. The reverse has two sections of heavy pitting at center, both meas. approx. 3.00 inches. Moving toward the ricasso there is another pitted area about 2.00 inches long. The rest of the blade surfaces are clean and bright.

Ricasso is etched with maker’s name “WM READ & SONS, BOSTON, MASS.” Leather washer is present at the base of the ricasso.

The hilt of the sword is in good condition. Hilt shows minor wear with a light patina. The round pommel cap is surmounted by a flower while the sides have a very crisp, sharp raised spread-winged eagle and a scrolled shield. The grip is covered in black leather with a tight twisted wire wrap. The single knuckle bow begins at the base of the pommel cap and comes around to the base of the grip where it widens into one clamshell counterguard ending in a circular quillon. The knuckle bow is decorated at top with a delicate scroll and floral design. The center of the bow is decorated with a raised floral design. The counterguard is heavily decorated with interlocking letters “GAR” surrounded by crossed rifles with knapsack, crossed swords and a fouled anchor.

The metal scabbard is finished bright and is complete with the brass throat, two mounts and drag. The top mount has two rings and consists of a heavy brass oak leaf design. The second mount is similar to the first but has only one ring. The drag follows the decorative pattern of the mounts and has a flower in a wreath of oak leaves on both sides. The scabbard itself is silver plated and shows numerous scratches and a few chips.   [AD] [ph:L]
