This uncased eighth-plate tintype is a very clear studio view of a Confederate lieutenant colonel wear frock coat, narrow brim hat, gauntlets and tall boots. He has tilted his hat slightly to one side and wears a sort of tight-lipped smile. His double-breasted coat clearly shows the two stars of a CS lieutenant colonel on his collar and an officer’s sash. He holds one hand down at his side.  With the other he reaches across, holding the butt of a revolver he stuck in his belt. His gauntlet obscures his belt plate, but it seems to be rectangular. The revolver, however, pretty clearly lacks a recoil shield, suggesting British revolver or perhaps a Starr. The foot of the photographer’s head-brace is visible behind him, and at left a false window backdrop clearly shows its feet. The photographer may have intended to disguise these details by matting and casing the image.

The image is very clear and the tones are good. There are just two small rubs to the emulsion, a couple of small marks in his breast, and larger one just above the gauntlet cuff on his bent arm. The plate has three small dimples on the back that are to the viewer’s left of the figure, and a little waviness at the lower left. These are not very visible straight on, but show when held at angle, though they do not touch the figure and have not chipped the emulsion. This is a nice view of a Confederate field grade officer, whose ready pistol suggests he did not hold a desk job. Ex- Bill Turner collection.  [sr] [ph:L]
