MINT REMINGTON MODEL 1903 SERVICE RIFLE FROM 1942

$4,500.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 2022-736

Exceptional Like-New example of a rare Remington Model 1903 (Modified) service rifle made early in World War II.  These rifles were issued in 1942 to Army and USMC troops because adequate numbers of M1 Garand rifles were not yet available; as such, they are often referred to by collectors as “Guadalcanal Guns.”  Their survival rate is very low and the quality of these arms is much higher than found in subsequent Remington Model 1903A3 production.  These early Remington M1903 (Modified) rifles are identical to World War I era M1903 production with the exception of no lightening grooves milled into the receiver.  These rifles are composed of all milled (not stamped) parts and they have a mix of blued and green parkerized finish.  An example in similar condition sold for $4,888.00 in a Rock Island Auction in September 2017 (a copy of the auction listing and results is included).

Principal markings include: “3142208” (serial number); “U.S. REMINGTON MODEL 1903” (manufacturer and model); “RA 5-42” (barrel date); circle “P” (firing proof); crossed cannon Ordnance Department inspection stamp; “R” (maker’s stamp located on many sub-components); “RLB” (inspector Colonel Roy L. Bowlin, U. S. Army Ordnance Department).

The condition is Like-New with 99% of the finish remaining!  The stock is perfect, but please note that Springfield supplied surplus stocks to Remington for the production of these rifles and they often have some minor blemishes; this stock has a small chip out of the toe next to the butt plate, but the rifle was made this way (the original stock finish covers this chip).  The finish of the stock is also the shiny M1903 finish found on World War I era production by Springfield and Rock Island. The bore is also mint and it appears only a few test rounds have been fired in this gun.  The blued and parkerized original finish is also perfect.  The gun has never been reworked.

Remington manufactured 348,085 Model 1903 rifles beginning in October 1941 prior to switching to Model 1903A3 production in early 1943.  Based on the serial number, this rifle was made in July 1942.  The barrel date being two months earlier (in May 1942) is typical.

Remington Model 1903 (Modified) rifles in unaltered World War II condition rarely come on the market!  Excellent opportunity to own a collector grade classic American rifle used by U.S. troops in their first battles of World War II.  This gun cannot be upgraded!  [sk][ph:L]
