This Civil War longarm is a .58 caliber Springfield Model 1863, Type II, single-shot muzzleloader. This M1863 musket was a government arsenal product from Springfield, Massachusetts. Over two hundred fifty thousand such weapons were produced for the U.S. Ordnance Department during 1864-1865. Often known as the “model 1864” because of production in 1864-65.

Overall condition is excellent with all gun metal showing bright finish except for the case-hardened lock and hammer…they show beautiful case color.

The lock plate is stamped with the date of manufacture (1864) behind the hammer. An eagle over “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD” are stamped in front of the hammer. The distinctive “S” shaped hammer with its beveled edges has the same mottled case colors as the lock plate. Bolster features sharp eagle motif. Breech shows matching 1864 date. The “VP” and eagle head are on the left facet. Original sights on the barrel; flip-up rear sight and combination bayonet lug/blade sight at muzzle. Wood tompion included.

Mechanics remain crisp and strong. Bore is bright and clean with perfect rifling. This version of the rifle musket was produced with barrel band springs. Original ramrod in the channel. The butt plate is boldly stamped “US”.

Black walnut stock has nice color, sharp edges, and none of the usual dings and dents normally found on weapons of this age.  Two strong government inspector cartouches remain on left flat.

A Springfield type II rifle-musket that very likely was never fired.  [jet] [ph:L]
