Item is a delicate ivory oval with a painted portrait identified as Cary Robinson of Company G, 6th Virginia Infantry.
Oval meas. approx. 2.25 x 3.00 inches with a full color bust portrait of Robinson at center. He wears a gray shell jacket open to reveal a white shirt and dark bowtie. The artist has achieved a perfect skin tone with a light rose tint to the cheeks. Robinson has brown eyes, black eyebrows and hair. The painting is done against a medium gray background that allows the brightness and features of Robinson’s face to shine forth from the surface of the ivory.
Paint is perfect and free of any chips or scratches. Reverse has a pencil inscription of “CARY ROBINSON.” Identity is confirmed by a CDV of Robinson published on his findagrave.com site.

Cary Robinson was born on November 9, 1843 in Richmond, Virginia. He was educated at Turner’s School and Richmond & Columbia College in Washington, D.C.
On October 18, 1861, he enlisted as a private for one year’s service at Carney Island, Virginia in Company G, 6th Virginia Infantry.
Robinson reenlisted for the duration of the war on February 18, 1862 and was promoted to sergeant-major on August 24, 1864. He saw service at Sewell’s Point, Seven Pines where he was slightly wounded, Jackson’s Valley Campaign, Malvern Hill, 2nd Manassas, South Mountain, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Bristoe Station where his brother William was killed, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Weldon Railroad and Burgess’ Farm where he was killed on October 27, 1864.
Cary Robinson was buried in Hollywood Cemetery.
A companion miniature of Cary’s brother William Robinson, who also served in the 6th Virginia and who was also killed in the war was as item 1138-1099.
