Confederate Swords by William Glaze are some of the most popular of Confederate Cavalry Sabers. These were originally provided under contract for the State of South Carolina following 1850-53 contracts that totaled 2000 cavalry sabers. These were to be issued to South Carolina militia units.

William Glaze did not manufacture the swords, he imported most of them from Schnitzler & Kirschbaum (S&K) in Solingen, Prussia, and put his unique “Columbia” stamp on them.

The drawn curved blade measures approximately 36” long with a 27.5” long stopped fuller and 17.5” narrow fuller. The blade is clean and bright. The edge has no nicks. The ricasso is marked with a slightly worn, but correct “Columbia S.C” stamp.

This sword has a good grip with approximately 50% original leather. The wire twist is complete and just ever so slightly loose. The basket and pommel are in good condition. The brass is clean with a mellow yellow tone. The pommel has two small “18” stamps on the end. Thick leather washer is in place at the ricasso.

The iron scabbard’s surface exhibits a pewter gray tone with mottles brown patches overall. There are four or five small dings in the scabbard. Both mounts and rings are present as is the throat and heavy drag.

A very fine example, being one of just 2000 cavalry sabers from William Glaze at the Palmetto Armory.  [jet] [ph:L]
