This is a complete Harpers Ferry gang mold for .58 caliber Minie balls complete with cavity pins.
This is a hinge-type mold with iron body and turned wood handles. It casts four .58 caliber Minie balls, which might better be known as Burton balls since their final shape was development by Acting Master Armorer James H. Burton at Harpers Ferry. This design was an improvement on earlier French and British expanding projectiles and was adopted for use in the new U.S. Model 1855 rifle muskets.
The side of the mold is clearly stamped “58/100,” reflecting the standardization of caliber for both rifles and rifle muskets starting in 1855. The mold is in very good condition with nice surface, showing only minor pitting and dings. The true rarity of this mold is that the four separate cavity pins are still present.
This is one of 119 iron, four-cavity gang molds (.58 caliber) that was manufactured at the Harpers Ferry Armory in 1859. [jet] [ph:L]
