This is a very good condition set of nicely detailed eaglehead spurs with 80 or 90 percent of their gilt finish on the exterior, cast and chased with the outstretched wings making up the entirety of the sidebars. The wing feathers are in raised relief, deeply sculpted, detailed, and overlapping. The neck feathers are incised, and delineated with multiple, very fine lines. The head, eyes, beak are done in depth. The rowel is solid, grooved and serrated.

These were made to be fixed in place in the heel of the boot by a screw through a loop extending below the eagle’s chest and steadied by a pointed, conical stud on the inside of the curve of the spur. The interior of the spurs shows, naturally, as a patinaed brass.

Eaglehead spurs were popular as gifts to mounted officers, either on their own, or as part of a more elaborate presentation. They were retailed by various makers and show not only different forms of the eagle, but differing methods of attachment, etc. This is a very nice pair with exceptional original color that display very well, combining art, history, condition,  and a decidedly patriotic motif.  [sr] [ph:m]
