This is an essential piece of artillery gear for crews manning the classic Civil War field-piece, the Model 1857 12-Pounder Napoleon. The pendulum hausse rear sight was the often-used replacement for the tangent scale rear sight that needed the cannon barrel trunnions to be level, something unlikely to encountered much in field conditions.

The pendulum hausse was placed in an open, forked yoke or rest on cannon breech, suspended from the short crosspiece with rounded arms that allowed the lead-filled disk at bottom to keep the upper, split, brass bar vertical, with the movable slider able to be adjusted for sighting and elevation using the increments marked along the right side. Given the different ranges, etc., of the various field guns, these sights are calibrated to specific calibers and models of guns.

The sight is complete, original, with the degrees plainly visible and nice, aged patina to the brass with only some thin, medium, darker age stains. See, Arms and Equipment of the Union and other sources for the use of this essential piece.  [sr] [ph:m]
