Dr. J. P. Rasser was contracted by the Confederacy and among his duties in Georgia was the examination of Conscripts for the Army.

THE OVERCOAT or army great coat is certainly "Homespun" that is a woven woolen fabric originally made from homespun yarn. This coat seems to be a blend of wool and flax. The color is a classic tan butternut. Butternut is actually a slang term and not a specific color. Domestically produced CS enlisted uniforms were mostly made of wool-jean cloth and colored with very poor dyes made of vegetables and nut shells. Their attempts at grey made with these dyes would quickly weather to a tan to brown color even if they started their life as grey. It has a 4-inch optional fold down collar and a permanently affixed cape that hangs to elbow length. The coat is trimmed all around, collar, front, cuffs, and bottom edge with a 1/2-inch varying to 3/4 of an inch woolen grosgrain-like tape which interestingly is green, now faded to a pale green. Green is the shade associated with Confederate military surgeons/physicians. The breast of the coat is lined with a course cotton fabric with a pattern of lines in shades of green, brown, tan and red (plaid). There is a pocket in the breast lined with unbleached cotton, The skirts of the greatcoat have 2 huge unbleached cotton pockets measuring 12 inches by 12 inches. One can imagine their utility for a doctor in the field. The sleeves are fully lined with polished tan colored cotton. The cuffs fold back 3 1/4 inches and are affixed this way. The coat has 6 hand whipped buttonholes and 6 Confederate (CS 177, 23 mm) manuscript "I" buttons back marked “S. ISAACS CAMPBELL & CO. 71 JERMYN ST. LONDON”. The overall condition is exceptional with a few darned period repairs and little if any insect damage. It is all handsewn.

THE SASH: The regulation green physician/surgeon sash is made from wool and is of a superior quality possibly of English make. It is 110 inches long including the 9 1/2 long tassels. It is 4 1/4 inches wide. The color is excellent with an olive tinge. The condition is perfect.

THE SHIRT:  This is a fine quality made unbleached linen pullover shirt. It has a turn-down collar and a 4-button front opening. The opening runs for 16 inches. The buttons used would have probably been glass but are now all gone. The cuffs had a single button of glass each, none now remain. The condition is excellent but there is staining that favors blood and one wonders if this was a bazar souvenir of Dr. Rasser's medical service. The length, typical of the Civil War era, is to the knee. It is 100% hand sewn.

This group was originally found by the highly respected Florida Civil War dealer Mr. Richard Ferry. It subsequently was sold to Mr. Ray Richey and ended up in his Texas Civil War Museum. [pe] [ph:L]]
