A very good example of the quintessential Confederate belt plate- the rectangular CSA. This plate comes with a letter of authenticity from well-known and respected Confederate collector Lewis Leigh who assigns it a likely date of 1864.

The plate has a pleasing olive green patina to the raised rim and letters, with a slightly darker tone to the recessed, stippled ground and reverse. The belt hook and one of the fastening hooks are present. The other fastening was broken off in use, likely accounting for the plate’s loss. The plate is free of dings, bends, or repairs, and shows some crudeness in the casting and finishing. A period after the “A” has effectively meshed with the right foot of the letter. The face of the edge and the letters was smoothed to some degree, but still shows a good deal of coarseness, indicating they were not using a very fine sand at the least and we note that the left edge of the plate (next to the “C”) shows a slight ledge where it appears a piece may have chipped off in the file finishing and the workman decided not to press his luck further and stopped rather than attempt to finish that edge to a level surface. All of which might go to support Leigh’s 1864 dating of the plate when the need was more pressing and resources even skimpier.

This is a classic Confederate plate with a tight provenance from a prominent, knowledgeable  collector and an interesting version of the pattern.  [sr][ph:L]
