This original Civil War Confederate two-piece interlocking belt buckle is the “Richmond style,” noted for its tall, thin and finely shaped letters with tall, straight serifs on a central disk that features a narrow border. This corresponds to Mullinax, “Confederate Belt Buckles and Plates” (1991) Plate 001, and has the same pattern wreath with ribbon ties at top and bottom, beveled bars on the tongue and wreath, and pronounced step on the reverse of the tongue bar. The pattern is now thought by some to have been produced by Shay, Williamson & Co. of Raleigh, NC, and supplied to the Richmond Arsenal for mounting on saber belts at its Ordnance Harness Shops in Clarksville, Va.

The buckle is complete, all original, in excellent non-excavated condition, with no bends, breaks or repairs and retaining its “body curve.” It has a pleasing, copper-bronze tones. The pieces are well finished and still showing some of the stippled pattern typical of sand casting.

A very rare non-dug example of the classic Confederate two-piece “CS” belt buckle.  [jet][ph:L]
