Left half of this hard case houses an ambrotype of a finely dressed woman. Her cheeks and forehead are tinted. The image is matted, framed, and under glass as is typical.

The right side of the case holds an 1877 tintype image of S. Charles Baker in uniform. He wears a kepi with infantry insignia and a sack coat with 2nd Lieutenant shoulder straps. This image is also matted, framed, and under glass in typical fashion. This image is identified on the back of the tin.

These are housed in a wonderful “Union” gutta purcha hard case. The case imagery features a man with horse, dismounted, and greeting women with their dog. The case remains in very fine condition with only one minor corner chip.

Charles Baker was from Philadelphia and enlisted as a Corporal in the 20th regiment of the Pennsylvania National Guard on July 26, 1877. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on August 13, 1877, and mustered out of service on September 21, 1877. In 1877, the 20th Regiment Pennsylvania National Guard was activated to respond to the Great Railroad Strike. Specifically, the regiment was deployed to help restore order in Pittsburgh and other areas of Pennsylvania experiencing unrest due to the strike.
