William H. Dunn of Ganges, Michigan served in both the 5th and 10th Michigan Cavalry during the Civil War. He enlisted on Aug. 14, 1862 in Co. "I" 5th Michigan Cavalry. At Gettysburg Dunn, a trooper in the famous charge lead by Custer, gallantly rescued then Major Luther Trowbridge from capture. He himself was taken for a brief moment by the Confederates but managed to get back to his command. Subsequently he followed a grateful Trowbridge (Luther Stephen Trowbridge (1836-1912) - Find a Grave Memorial) to the 10th Michigan cavalry where he eventually became captain of Co. E. He was present at the capture and death of Confederate General John Hunt Morgan and was part of the Stoneman Raid to burn down the Salisbury Confederate Prison. He ended the war as a brevet major. THE UNIFORM AND RELATED CIVIL WAR ITEMS: This cavalry officer's cavalry dark blue wool broadcloth short jacket has a 9 button front with matching "GODDARD & BRO. WATERBURY CONNECTICUT" eagle officer "C" buttons. The non-functional cuffs have a total of 6 gilt eagle officer "C" buttons. The  9 1/2 inch elbows taper to a 4 ½ inch wide cuff, The 1 ¼ inch standing collar is lined in well worn black velvet. The cuffs exhibit black, now brown wool quatrefoil in a single 1/4 inch wide strand. The shoulder straps measure 5 inches by 2 inches and are gold bullion mounted showing wear to the outer borders. The yellow velvet backing is worn in spots and faded but the two captain's bullion pips at respective ends are perfect. The evenly worn interior body is made of a quilted brown/green polished cotton. There is a left breast pocket and white cotton sleeve lining. The short jacket exhibits scattered but minor mothing and there is service wear to the inner cuffs. It currently has captain's rank on it but one could date its tailoring to April of 1864 when Dunn received a commissioned rank of Lieutenant in the 10th Michigan cavalry.

Additionally in this grouping there is an officer's tarred linen and leather haversack with embossed scrolls, flowers and Federal shield motif. The leather body is soft and pliable. The carrying strap is torn from body on one side but all there. The haversack's black leather flag measures 14 inches by 13 inches. A very old handwritten tag reads: "Carried Through the Civil War By Wm H. DUNN GANGES, MICH.".  There is a Civil War officer's maroon silk sash that shows significant fading, it has a worn fringe and a few holes. Also there is a Model 1858 "Bullseye Canteen" with cover; maker marked on pewter spout "HADDEN PORTER & BOOTH PHILA.". It has a coarse brown wool covering that is 80% intact. The cotton over-the-shoulder strap is fully there but showing wear. Attached to the canteen is an old tag saying: “Carried Through the Civil War By Wm H. DUNN GANGES, MICH.”

THE POST WAR ITEMS IN BRIEF: A veteran's kepi with Michigan side buttons double gold cord chin strap, fully lined inside in brown cotton and retaining its sweat band. There is a maker's label "FRANK HENDERSON REGALIA KALAMAZOO MICH." and "W. H. Dunn" is written on it. There is a broken in places white painted leather belt with an intricately cast brass GAR belt buckle. This is the late standard cast rectangular belt buckle that mimics the motif found on the clamshell guard of the GAR sword. The insignia of the Cavalry, Infantry, Artillery, and Navy are incorporated along with the GAR cypher. There is also a portion of the shoulder belt and buckle.  Also included a post Civil War pair of leather mittens and leather pistol holster. A  2 ½ inch porcelain GAR Gettysburg 50th anniversary souvenir canteen "JULY 1863-1.2.3.4. JULY 1913". A cord in cotton and gold bullion for a GAR slouch hat. Also included is a group of eight 1/6 plate ambrotype's and daguerreotypes possibly of family members and one daguerreotype of a house.

This large collection of Civil War items and earlier and later objects was in the Texas Civil War Museum.  [pe][ph:L]
