A near excellent Middle Fourth Model Colt M1851 Navy, with all-matching serial number 141159, to which the Colt site assigns an 1863 production date. This model falls in the #118000-#16800 range, overlapping with earlier and particularly later models, showing the improvement of a capping groove in the cut-out of the recoil shield, but retaining the earlier thinner catch for the loading lever. This one is a real collector’s gun, qualifying at least as fine and near excellent for condition with all original parts, about 80 percent original finish, with sharp lettering, numbers and cylinder scene, only showing a few light scratches and slight edge wear to the grips at bottom.

The barrel has very strong remnants of a lustrous blue finish, with correct front pin sight and crisp barrel address using Colt’s Connecticut-granted military rank of Colonel: “ADDRESS COL. SAM’L COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA.” The loading assembly shows case colors and a sharp serial number on the lever. The frame shows loads of mottled blue, purple and yellow case colors, with a sharp COLTS / PATENT stamp. The cylinder shows as plum mixed with subdued blues, with the case colors picked up again in the recoil shield. The metal, of course, is smooth throughout. The naval engagement cylinder scene is sharp, with the engagement date along the front edge of the cylinder, and crisp Colt patent and serial number stamps, omitting the Ormsby marking, as is correct for this model. There are just a few very light, very shallow dings to the front edge of the cylinder and some crustiness to the nipples. Even the forcing cone, however, retains some blue finish. The triggerguard has a crisp 36 CAL stamp on the left and traces of silver finish, which was usually applied very thinly, if at all, and most often completely gone. The brass retains an untouched, medium bright tone. The grips have a tight fit, warm brown tone and good finish. On the left grip there is some shallow wear at the lower forward edge. On the right the wear at that point is a bit more noticeable, with some shallow scratches at lower right center and a few more at more upper right. The mechanics are excellent and the bore is clean, with visible rifling. Given its overall condition the pistol cannot have been used much, if at all.

This is a very strong Colt Navy that will be hard to improve upon and a real stand-out in a collection, whether focused on Civil War revolvers or just Colts. There were no military contracts in this serial number range, but pistols in it were purchased on the open market and show up in government ordnance records, so it would also make a strong addition to a cavalry display, showing pretty nearly what these pistols looked like when issued. They were also, needless to say, one of Colt’s most attractive and popular pistols, lighter than his .44 Cal. Dragoons or Armies, but packing more punch than his .32 pocket pistols. See Jordan and Geri for details and have a close look at our photos. This is a very strong Colt Navy.  [sr] [ph:L]
