This is a really great, and really rare piece of insignia, showing its age in the natural oxidation of the black velvet ground to soft brown and the embroidered bullion wreath and “VA” to a muted silver-gray, but with no moth holes, just a few loose threads and some displaced coils in the gilt jaceron wire border that remains in place. The backing is complete, with the stitching good around the edge, showing a few stains, but no holes, and having the two fastening loops in place, attached to the internal stiffener, which served to mount it on a hat with leather wedges, thong or lace.

In the late 1850s Virginia tried to bring its uniformed volunteer militia into line with US military dress, though not with a lot of success, though officers are frequently shown in period photos wearing the US regulation dark blue frock coats and the 1858 dress hat with state insignia and buttons. Even after the eruption of war and adoption of Confederate gray, however, state insignia like this can be seen on Viriginia officers’ headgear.

This is great example, very rare, very well preserved, and showing its age unapologetically and untouched, with very much the look of a valued family relic.  [sr][ph:m/L]
