This US regulation captain's kepi was passed down through the family of Sergeant Patrick Sheehan Co. G of the 63rd New York Infantry (63rd New York Infantry Regiment in the American Civil War). The cap is an English import. Impressed into the Moroccan leather disc of the crown is a garter design surmounted by a Victorian crown reading: "210 BROADWAY COR. FULTONS" over "-?-". And all this above "WATKINS". Watkins, a New York city outfitter, has yet to be identified by this compiler.
The wool broadcloth cap was originally black but has begun to fade to a green color (a trick of dye corruption through aging, this cap was never green). In the front it rises to 3 inches. Sewn to it is a patch measuring 3 inches long by 2 inches high. This patch is brown/ black satin backed and is embroidered with heavily tarnished silver metallic leaves of laurel or oak within which were once the metal numerals "63" (a shadow remains). The patch has a metallic cord around its circumference. The front and sides of the cap have well-worn. and in places loose and threadbare, woolen worsted cords in pairs denoting the rank of captain. The cords also run around the circumference of the cap at the junction of the baseband and the crown. These, once black now fading to varying shades of green. Additionally, they form a quatrefoil pattern on the top of the 5-inch inset crown disc. The bound patent leather visor is 1 3/4 inches in depth and is 6 3/4 inches in length. The functioning 95% intact but brittle chin strap has a small silver metal buckle and is held in place by 2 Union staff eagle officer buttons. The interior of the cap is lined with polished cotton; this is the adjustable type and is fragile but 90% intact. The maroon leather sweat band is just over 1 1/4 inches high. It is whipped stitched into place and is 100% intact.
One can only assume that Sergeant Sheehan came into possession of this cap after the war likely through a GAR or 63rd New York regimental association to which he belonged. He, a hard fighting former veteran of the 63rd regiment Irish Brigade perhaps curated their library or museum. This cap is impressive it has "it", that is the look so sought after by collectors. Once displayed in the famous Texas Civil War Museum Fort Worth Texas. [pe][ph:L]
