A 2 ¾ inch by 3 ¼ inch lightly tinted1/6 plate tintype of a mounted US cavalry trooper. He is riding a dark colored mare and seated on a McClellan saddle with saddle bags at the rear. The best part is the trooper is proudly displaying a drawn Colt Dragoon revolver, holding it upside down, draped across his leg. The colt is very clear and the long dragoon cylinder, rounded trigger-guard, type 3 model, stands out. Visible in the picture is a large dragoon sized pommel holster on the same side. They are usually in pairs, mounted on each side of the horse’s neck. Another revolver is situated on the trooper’s belt. The holster flap is tucked in and the grip of what appears to be a Model 1860 Colt is sticking out.

The cavalryman appears to be wearing a standard 12 button yellow trimmed shell jacket. The photographer has highlighted the cuff, front jacket seam, collar, belt plate, hat buttons and horse bridle bit with gold gilt paint. This process partially conceals some details in the image. He is wearing what looks like a pattern 1858 cap, with an up-turned brim. No sword is visible but, he is clearly wearing an over the shoulder strap to support the weight of something else on his opposite side. His trousers are very lightly tinted pale blue. He has spurs on his boots. Luckily the horse was very still while the photograph was being exposed, with only a small shadow along the top of the horse’s neck. The background looks like a short grass field, with an out-of-focus tree line on the horizon. One noticeable orb distortion in the emulsion in the upper right corner of the image. The oval gilt matting has a patriotic border with US flags embossed and red velvet lining. The outside of the case is leather bound with a single hook and eye fastener.

Colt Dragoons were the first production revolvers of any significant quantity from Samuel Colt after the vaunted Colt Walker single-action revolver got him financially back on his feet in the late 1840s. The massive weapons .44 caliber, six-shot percussion revolvers that weighed in at an impressive 4-1/2 pounds. They were produced mostly to satisfy military contracts from 1848 to 1861. The lighter and more streamlined Model 1860 Colt Army revolvers superseded them in 1860. Approximately 20,000 of the three Colt Dragoon models were produced during its years in production. An un-common mounted cavalry outdoor view with an equally rare pictured Colt Dragoon revolver.  [stp][ph:L]
