Watercolor and gouache on paper. Signed and dated lower right, “© D. Troiani 78.” Depicting a Civil War–era Confederate infantry sergeant standing at ease in a butternut-gray shell jacket bearing the chevrons of his rank, a slouch hat with star insignia, blanket roll slung across the chest, carbine, haversack, canteen, and bound leg wraps — rendered with the meticulous historical accuracy and fine draftsmanship for which the artist is known. Matted and framed under glass in a gilt and ebonized molding.
Framed size: 12 × 19 in.
Provenance: Ex-Ron Tunison Collection.
Executed in 1978, this work dates to the formative period of Troiani’s career, predating the major narrative compositions and print editions that established his reputation as the foremost painter of the American Civil War.
Don Troiani is among the foremost American military-historical painters, celebrated for his exhaustively researched depictions of the Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War, executed from original uniforms, weapons, and live models. His work is held in numerous museum and institutional collections, and his original paintings have achieved auction results into the five figures. [ss][ph:L]
