In 1861 Colt introduced two new pocket model revolvers in caliber .36. These two new models were known as the Model 1862 Police and the Model 1862 Pocket Navy; neither were earmarked for the police or the navy. This .36 caliber revolver had a five shot fluted cylinder and the grip frame and trigger guard that were of Colt Pocket size and style. It had a round barrel, a creeping loading lever and was available in barrel lengths 3 1/2 to 6 1/2 inches. Called the Model 1862 it went into production as early as late 1860 (not 1861) and would remain in production until the end of the Colt percussion era in 1873.

This excellent Colt Police Revolver bears a serial number of “37630”. All numbers match throughout. The 4 1/2-inch-long barrel has 96% original factory bluing; however halfway down the barrel that is an unexplained surface flaw a tiny bump or a pimple; this is NOT as a result of a bulge in the bore. The top of the barrel is marked in a single line with the usual New York address and reads: “ADDRESS COL SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA”. The 2-piece loading lever has 85% case color. The frame bears 95% original case-hardened color, and all its screws are deeply blued. The lower left side of the frame, forward of the cylinder is marked in two lines, “COLT’S PATENT”. The 5 shot cylinder has 95% original blue. One of the cylinder flutes is marked, “PAT. SEPT. 10TH 1850”. The hammer has 85% case colors. The mechanics are perfect. All brass furniture trigger assembly and back-strap have lost any semblance of silver plating but are never-the-less in flawless condition with ".36 CAL" marked on the left side. The barrel’s rifled bore is excellent but could be cleaned up a bit.  The walnut grip is in perfect condition with 99% factory varnish. There is no degree to "mint"!  Mint means perfect and it is used far too often to describe firearms that are very good excellent; this is disingenuous. Here offered is excellent condition Model 1862 Colt Police revolver that is a joy to behold.   [pe][ph:L]
