These matching chevrons, right and left sleeve, were worn by Nathan Warren of the of Company E 45th Massachusetts Volunteers. Please click on this link (45th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry). Corporal Warren's record reflects perfectly that of his regiment.

The chevrons are made of wool and are a mid-blue color; these are just over 1/2 inch wide respectively and are about 7 1/2 inches end to end. The pair, in pairs, are hand sewn to a black felt patch 8 inches long by 9 inches high with a depth of 3 1/2 inches at the apex or V. There are a few tiny moth holes in this black felt portion. An old 19th century tattered envelope measuring 9 inches by 4 1/2 inches has penned on it "Corporals' Chevrons" and below this at left bottom "Nathan Warren" over "Corp. Co. E. 45th M.V." over " 1862-3".   These are classic and have a great look.

Nathan Warren was a 24 year clerk residing in Waltham, MA when he enlisted on 9/15/62 as a Private and mustered in the 45th Massachusetts, a nine month regiment; he shortly thereafter is shown at the rank of Corporal.  He was present with the regiment until January 1863, when he was detailed as a Clerk in Dr. Snelling’s office (Medical Director) at New Berne, NC. He was then shown as being ill at Waltham, MA from 6/28/63, and mustered out on 7/7/63. Following the war, he became vice president of a bank in Waltham; in 1873 he crossed the plains with Gen. Custer as a member of the Yellowstone park commission.  Warren died on 4/11/1922 and is buried in Mount Feake Cemetery in Waltham, MA.  [pe/ld][ph:L]
