A large 8 x 10 inch albumen photograph of General Robert E. Lee, signed by him "R E Lee" across the lower right of the image. The portrait is the celebrated bust likeness made by Julian Vannerson, of Vannerson & Jones, Richmond, during Lee's studio sitting of March 1864 — the session whose images were carried through the Federal blockade to sculptor Edward V. Valentine for use as models for his sculpture of the General. The three-quarter view shows Lee in Confederate gray, the three stars of his collar insignia at the throat, full beard and dark bow tie. It is the most popular and most widely reproduced of all Vannerson's portraits of Lee, and remains among the most recognizable wartime images of the Confederate commander.
Lee signed comparatively few of his photographs, and authentic signed examples in the large display format — as opposed to the ubiquitous carte-de-visite — are decidedly scarce. As Lee died in October 1870, the signature establishes this as a lifetime print. Mounted to a plain card, without photographer's backmark. Measures 8 x 10 inches.
CONDITION: Warm sepia tone overall with strong modeling in the face. A faint diagonal surface line crosses the upper field; light silvering and mottling in the dark ground; minor wear to the mount corners. A handsome, eminently displayable example. [ss][ph:L]
