One of the scarcer official badges of the 75th Anniversary ceremonies. Among the very large number of support personnel attending the 1,845 Union and Confederate veterans who attended the ceremonies- the tent city accommodating them was built to house some 7,000 persons, and included mess tents, a hospital, and other facilities- there were just 200 Boy Scouts selected from the York-Adams County area to act as messengers, guides, and escorts among other duties. In the course of the ceremonies they were officially thanked by members of the anniversary commission and each presented with one of these silvered badges, making it one of the rarer officially issued badges for the ceremonies.

This one is in very good condition, showing just some very slight fraying to the right edge of the red, white and blue ribbon. The top bar, with pin, is in place, reading “BOY SCOUT” and the planchet preserves good detail to the raised lettering and motifs, reading “75th ANNIVERSARY / BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG” at top, with a US flag vertical at left and a CS battleflag at right, suspended on either side of a Roman fasces, the bound rods and ax symbolizing the Republic, before it was hijacked for more nefarious purposes. This is surrounded by a wreath of oak leaves and rests on a rectangular panel reading “BLUE AND GRAY / REUNION,” a characterization of the commemoration clearly aimed at fostering national unity. Efforts had been made in that direction, with mixed results, in preparing for the 50th Anniversary in 1913.

The medal is 4-1/4” overall and is marked on the upper reverse of the planchet by Bailey, Banks and Biddle of Philadelphia, the prestigious Philadelphia jeweler and silversmith. The ribbon retains strong color and the top bar and planchet retain much of their silver frosting with just some slight expected wear to raised edges and highpoints, one tiny spot of green on the left front in oak leaves and two on the reverse.
