An excellent condition artillery pendulum hausse marked by Watervliet Arsenal and for use with a 3-Inch Rifle, a widely used and well-regard fieldpiece. The brass shows moderate age toning, with the slider and toggle both in place, no bends, cracks or breaks, and the increment markings sharp and legible, marked with a “0” at bottom on one side for point blank range, and the toggle showing smooth metal with some faint bluish-gray color and scattered, very small age spots.

This is crisply stamped on the brass just below the toggle on one side, “U.S. / WATERVLIET / ARSENAL” with “arsenal” struck twice, leaving some of the letters slightly blurred, but legible and unambiguous. On the opposite side in the same position is stamped, “3. IN.” designating the particular type of gun it is calibrated for. In his 1860 Artillerist’s Manual Gibbon cautions, “Each piece must, of course, be provided with its own scale, seat and muzzle-sight, all of which are marked for the particular piece to which they belong.”

The pendulum hausse was the often-used replacement for the tangent scale rear sight that needed the cannon barrel trunnions to be level, something unlikely to encountered much in field conditions. It was placed in an open, forked yoke or rest on cannon breech, suspended from the short crosspiece toggle with rounded arms that allowed the lead-filled disk at bottom, with the help of gravity, to keep the upper, split, brass bar vertical, with the movable slider able to be adjusted for sighting and elevation using increments marked along the sides calibrated for the particular type of gun.

For reference we include Gibbon’s 1860 Artillerist’s Manual description of the pendulum hausse, also known as the “Russian Hausse” from its first use in that army.
