This is a nice example of a CS smooth Read artillery projectile. This shell is in dug condition with some pitting. It has been well preserved appearing to have been run through electrolysis but never coated with a sealant. It has an open, tapered fuse hole and an iron sabot. The “dimple” that is typical of Confederate manufacture is present in the base.
A nice Confederate shell that looks very much like its Northern “Parrott” counterpart. [jet] [ph:L]
