The Ketchum Hand Grenade was a type of grenade used by the north in the Civil War. It was patented on August 20, 1861 (U.S. Pat. #33,089) by William F. Ketchum, a mayor of Buffalo, N.Y. They were known to have been used in the Port Hudson, Vicksburg, and Petersburg campaigns.
Ketchum grenades came in 1, 3 and 5 lb. varieties. A complete grenade had the appearance of a cast-iron football with fins on the end to stabilize the flight. The four paper fins were set into a wood tailpiece protruding from the rear of the projectile. One of the fins had a patent date printed on it. The grenades were largely inefficient.
Offered here is an original, non-dug, 3-pound Ketchum grenade (without fins). The iron body is in excellent condition. Nice mold seams are visible along the sides. Original nipple remains inside at the nose. Also the original pressure plate (plunger) with spring wire remains in the nose.
A nice Civil War Ketchum grenade. [jet] [ph:L]
