The official designation of this cartridge at the time was “US center-fire metallic cartridge” with the commercial designation being .45-70-405.  This represented caliber .50, powder charge 70 grains, and a bullet weight of 405 grains.

This is an internally primed .45-70 cartridge with copper case, and a Benet style primer, made at the Frankford Arsenal. This cartridge has an overall length of 2.548” and a case length of 2.105”. Good condition, no corrosion.

The cartridge is headstamped “R 2  82  F”. As a means of distinguishing between rifle and carbine cartridges, the arsenal began headstamping them in March of 1877. The “R” identifies this as a rifle cartridge (as opposed to “C” for carbine). The “2  82” indicates the month and year it was made. The “F” indicates that the cartridge was made at the Frankford Arsenal.

The .45-70 rifle cartridge replaced the .50-70 rifle cartridge in U.S. Army service in 1873.  [jet] [ph:L]
