ATLANTA ARSENAL ARTILLERY SHELL CRATE

$3,500.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 846-382

In 1961 workmen recovered this crate during construction of I-75 around Atlanta.

This crate for 32 pounder shells measures approximately 15” long (without the two handles) by 8.5” wide. It is 9” tall (without the lid). The crate is held together with iron square nails. There is a handle on each end. The lid retains a portion of iron strap that once extended down the sides of the box.

Stenciled markings remain on the crate but are mostly unreadable. There are markings on the lid that have been determined to read “To Col Johnson / Atlant_”;  this information on the box was confirmed by Gordon Jones at the Atlanta History Center.

On one side is “32 __ SHELL / ____ FIXED / 10 Second ___”.

We might be able to decipher more based on a box in the Beverly DuBose housed at the Atlanta History Center. It is one of four known to exist.

Condition is overall very good. There are cracks and some joint separation but considering this is a “dug” ammunition crate, it is in amazing condition.   [jet] [ph:L]
