The “cascabel” is the large knob on the back (breech) end of a cannon barrel. It was designed as a knob to which arresting ropes were attached to deal with the recoil of firing the cannon.

A cannon's cascabel comprises the knob and the neck. By some definitions the cascabel additionally includes the base of the breech. Cascabels varied in design and appearance, but were a common feature of cannons from the 17th century until the advent of the breech loading cannons in the late 19th century.

Offered here is the large cascabel from a burst iron cannon barrel. Piece has been cleaned and coated and is now in very fine condition for a “relic.” Knob is approximately 4.6” in diameter and about 4.5” long.
