A typical, but large, Civil War shell with “ears” for smoothbore cannon or mortar.
The fuse hole is tapered to accept a wood time fuse adaptor. “Ears” (tong holes) are placed on each side of the fuse hole. This shell measures just under 8” in diameter. Iron body is in overall very good, smooth condition with only minor scattered patches of light surface rust.
Of special interest is the phrase “RELIC OF FT McHENRY PRISON” in old white paint surrounding the fuse hole. [jet][ph:L]
