These simple iron ring gauges allowed for quick inspection and sorting of shot and shell by size, something of critical importance to a gun crew and a large task given the huge stacks of cannon balls seen in some photographs of ordnance yards. This one would fit a 11-inch round and is stamped near the handle: “10.” and “83.”

This in good condition also seems to be a variation doing away with the wood handle mounted on a narrow tang and uses instead an integral flat metal handle with slight swell and rounded end.    [SR][ph:L]
