These simple iron ring gauges allowed for quick inspection and sorting of shot and shell by size, something of critical importance to a gun crew and a large task given the huge stacks of cannon balls seen in some photographs of ordnance yards. This one was to sort 11-inch rounds, has rust, but is clearly stamped on one side below the loop: “XI IN 10.85 / Small Gauge / 1855.”

The ring and its base are solid and in good condition, though with surface rust. The stamping is clear and legible. This was clearly fitted with a wood handle fitted over a narrow tang extending from the loop that has broken off, but it still displays well. We note some gauges with wide, fully metal handles, likely later versions intended to avoid this problem, perhaps due to carelessly handled round about to be inspected.   [SR][ph:L]
