The "gimlet" has a screw on the end and was intended to be used to remove broken pieces of friction primers from the vent. It could also serve as a priming wire to poke a hole in the powder bag. This one is in good condition.

Stamped just below the loop is, “WATERVLIET  US  12  M” indicating it was manufactured at Watervliet Arsenal for a 12-inch mortar.  The loop measures 2.34 inches in diameter and the overall length is 23.75 inches.  The pick end is twisted with a sharpened edge as you would find on a drill bit.

This implement has a dark patina with some very light surface rust. [jet][ph:L]
