Buff leather thumbstall used by artillerymen for plugging the vent of a hot cannon barrel when it is swabbed between shots. Blocking the vent prevented air from being sucked into the barrel and allowed all remaining embers to be extinguished by the wet sponge.
The piece works by placing the thumb into a padded “pocket” sewn at one end. The thick pad protects the thumb from the hot surface of the barrel. The leather strap follows down the top of the thump and is tied tight around the wrist.
This item is complete with pad and twisted cord ties. It measures 5” long with a good thick pad and strong cord.
Soiled and well-worn, but remains strong and perfect for display. From the Texas Civil War Museum collection. [jet] [ph:L]
