A standard implement with every artillery piece, this rare, Civil War-era artillery gunner’s lanyard has survived the years in good condition. The iron hook at the end of the hemp lanyard was attached to the ring of the friction primer set in the breech of the gun tube, and the full length of cord allowed the gunner to stand clear of the recoil path when the gun was fired.

The non-regulation wood handle measures 4” long and about 0.6” in diameter with groove in the middle to hold cord. This is not of the usual “turned” wood handle shape and may be a field alteration.  The hemp cord – or “cod line” as it was named in the 1863 Ordnance Manual – is knotted but appears to be full length. The original iron hook is intact on the end of the cord.

This lanyard is in very good condition. From the Texas Civil War Museum collection. [jet] [ph:L]
