Very fine condition brown leather fuse pouch. Made by J. Darrow in Augusta, Georgia.

The leather remains in remarkable condition with some signs of use and minor scuffing, but absolutely no crackling or flaking. The “body” of this pouch is constructed with one piece forming the outer front flap, back, and inside front. Two side pieces are sewn in place to form the “pouch.” An inner flap with side “ears” is sewn in to keep fuses dry. A closing latch tab and two belt loops complete the piece.

There is a tooled line around the edge of the outer flap and along the front edge of the inner flap. Nicely stamped on the front flap in a football-shaped cartouche is “J. DARROW / Maker / AUGUSTA, GA.” where the word “Maker” is stamped in an old English style. The latch tab is attached to the underside of the flap by a single, straight line of stitching.  This tab is complete and unbroken. The corresponding brass finial is securely mounted on the bottom of the pouch.

The interior flap is in excellent condition and complete with both ears firmly sewn in place.

The two belt loops on the back are also in fine shape and show light use. Stitching is complete and unbroken.

All stitched seams remain tight and sound. An excellent example of a Confederate-made artilleryman’s fuse pouch. Certainly one of the finest examples of maker-marked Confederate leather. From the Texas Civil War Museum collection.   [jet] [ph:L]
