The tow hook was essential tool in the artillery. Simply made of iron in two pieces, this measures 13-1/2 inches overall and carries a claw-hammer head on one end of the bar handle which is bent at the other to form a short hook. Artillery rounds were delivered in sturdy wood crates packed with tow to prevent the contents shifting. The hammer and claw were essential for prying off the lids and the hook was handy for drawing out the tow packing material. Time was of the essence when ammunition chests had to be replenished and hastened back to the guns, and these were simply and ruggedly made to do the job quickly. This one is in great condition, with some shallow corrosion overall but still shows the US government ownership stamp on one side of the hammer head. It is an essential piece in any artillery collection or display. [sr][ph:L]
